A 14-year-old reportedly came home crying following two train conductors accused her of lying regarding her age, even handing her a fine despite her school uniform and valid student card.
“She was shaken and in tears when she came home,” Naomi Sanger, the teenager’s mother, said in an interview with The Independent on Thursday. Leila looks older than her age, as do many girls these days.”
On May 25, the teenager from Snodland in the United Kingdom was making a change of train to return home, as she was used to, when she was allegedly held up by two train controllers, accusing her of being a adult.
And despite her school uniform, student card and train pass confirming her age, the two men would then have fined her £104.40, the equivalent of almost $175, in addition to forcing her to call her mother.
Without a response, they would have grabbed her cell phone to look at her messages, the 43-year-old mother continued.
“He gaslighted her, stating that she had previously said she was 15, which she did not, hammered the mother. There’s a way to ask the age, and even hand out a fine if they didn’t believe it, that doesn’t involve that level of intimidation.”
Since then, the shaken teenager would not have wanted to set foot on a train once more, fearing that the scenario would repeat itself, continued “The Independent”.
If the fine was eventually canceled, the company’s general director of enforcement would have suggested, for her part, that it is necessary to have a valid identity document at all times to prove your age, according to the English media.
