Saturday evening, the train on the Kortrijk-Poperinge line was traveling between the Wervik and Comines stations when it hit a car near the Industrial Boulevard. The events took place around 7:30 p.m. “The train was not traveling very fast, but suddenly we felt that it was braking hard. There was a small shock, nothing more, no passenger in my car was hit,” says one of the passengers.
The train driver went straight down to ask regarding the driver of the vehicle, but the passenger compartment was empty! Police officers, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene. No one was injured either in the car or on the train.
A motorist witnessed the situation while driving on Industrial Boulevard: “I saw two young men trying to push a car and I stopped to help them. As this seemed suspicious to me, I left and the train arrived.”
The people concerned therefore fled. The car is immaculate in France; It is a Peugeot 3008, a model that we know is regularly stolen. The police are investigating this accident with strange circumstances.
According to SNCB, there were around 200 people on the train. As the train was stopped on the Industrial Boulevard, those who wished were able to get off following a half-hour wait. A bus shuttle has been set up for others. No more trains ran between Menen and Poperinge that day.
This accident caused serious traffic problems as two level crossings were blocked: that of the Industrial Boulevard, but also that of the Avenue des Châteaux.
