Train Chaos in Brussels: Passengers Stranded, Investigation Launched

A resident of Brussels, Roger was precisely on this train. “At Silly station, the train stopped and as it did not restart following an abnormally long time, I got up to see what was happening. The train doors were open. I went down to the platform and realized that two thirds of the train was passing the red light.”

After getting back on the train, the Brussels resident met the attendant. “She said she was absolutely sorry but that she might no longer give the signal to restart the train. She told us that he was drunk, that he had already missed the platform in Mouscron and that he had run two red lights.”

In a video and a photo, published on X, formerly Twitter, we can see the attendant distributing water and biscuits to passengers.

If the Brussels resident laughs regarding it today, it is also “because in the end, nothing serious happened” but, he says, “a catastrophe might have happened very quickly”.

Unable to continue their journey by train, commuters were told that a bus would come to pick them up. “But he stopped at every station to pick up those waiting for their train. I finally got home at 3:30 in the morning,” Roger finishes.

The train driver apparently deserted the scene. When contacted, SNCB said it “took the facts very seriously” and had “immediately launched an investigation” to clarify the facts. It also indicates, just like Infrabel, that, contrary to what travelers say, “the train did not pass any red lights.”
