Trail runners are drawn back to the Gastein mountains

At the beginning of September, the “Adidas Terrex Infinite Trails” once once more attracted more than 1,100 runners to the Gastein Valley for mountain runs. This year the race comes up with a new middle distance. Spectators benefit from the free public transport offer on the day of sports.

Preparations for the “Adidas Terrex Infinite Trails” are currently underway in the Gastein Valley. More than 1100 runners from 44 nations will compete in the Gastein mountains from September 8th to 10th. The longest distance leads over the Gamskarkogel, the Graukogel and the Stubnerkogel. The athletes can expect 5,000 meters of altitude difference over a 60-kilometer route. But you can also prove your trail running skills in Gastein over shorter distances: You can also compete with running enthusiasts from all over the world over 15, 30 and 45 kilometers. The so-called 30K race is part of the Infinite Trails program for the first time. “With around 1900 meters of altitude, the 30K offers the perfect mix of steep climbs and flowing trails. The perfect challenge for everyone who wants to improve and advance to alpine heights following a successful participation in the 15K last year,” explains race director Mike Hamel.

Team racing as the supreme discipline

The supreme discipline on the Infinite Trails has been the team race since the beginning. Three members of a team start at the same time as a relay in the categories men, women or mixed. A total of 100 kilometers must be covered for each team, with the total distance being divided into three laps that take into account the different types of runners. One runner per team has to cover a distance of 21, 35 or 44 kilometers, with the difference in altitude also increasing with the distance. However, there is the same amount of time for all three rounds. “This also enables slower runners to take part in this special format,” emphasizes Hamel.

Free public transport for everyone on Saturday

The date of the event is favorable for potential spectators of the sports spectacle. On September 9, on Sports Day, public transport in the province of Salzburg is free, including all buses in the Gastein Valley. The mountain railways are also offering a hiking swing ticket for 30 euros for online sale this Saturday. For around 30 euros you can use the Schlossalmbahn, Kaserebenbahn, Senderbahn, Stubnerkogelbahn and Graukogellift from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A partnership between the organizers of the Infinite Trails and the Salzburger Verkehrsverbund also enables free travel to and from the event by bus and train for all starters. “Almost half of our starting field took advantage of this offer last year,” reports Hamel of his experience.
