Crackers burst; Over 100 dead in Iraq wedding hall fire

Baghdad: It is reported that more than 100 people have died in a wedding hall fire in northern Iraq. The accident took place in the northern Iraqi city of Hamdaniya in Nineveh province of Iraq. More than 100 people, including the bride and groom, have died and more than 150 people have been injured, the BBC reports, citing local media.

The reason for the accident was that firecrackers were burst outside the wedding pandal and sparks from it fell inside the pandal. The extent of the accident was compounded by the fact that the pandal’s shoddy ceilings quickly caught fire and spread among the people below.

The accident happened on Tuesday night. Criticism has been raised following the accident that the pandal was built using low-quality prefabricated products that catch fire quickly. Although the figures of the dead and injured have not been officially confirmed, international media reports citing local media and various news agencies that more than 100 people have died.

Hamdania, where the accident occurred, is located 400 km northwest of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani has asked the health and interior ministries to lead rescue efforts and investigate the accident.
