It was 1:45 p.m. when the worst happened on the Eekstraat level crossing. While the barriers are closed and a freight train is approaching, two women still decide to try to cross the railway tracks. “The freight train was no longer able to brake and hit them both,” comments Infrabel spokesperson Frédéric Petit for Het Laatste Nieuws.

A violent shock which unfortunately left one of the two women no chance. “One of the victims did not survive,” he confirms. For the moment, it is difficult to explain why the two people crossed when the barriers were down and the light was red. “It was absolutely forbidden to cross,” insists Frédéric Petit.
The other woman, hit by the train, escaped without injuries but was, understandably, in a state of shock. Interrupted for a good part of the followingnoon, train traffic between Ghent-Dampoort and Lokeren was able to resume around 5 p.m. However, travelers should expect disruption to rail traffic on the Ghent-Antwerp line and significant delays during rush hour.
The investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident is still ongoing, specifies Infrabel.
