Two children from Wommelgem, in the province of Antwerp, lost their lives in a quad accident in Turkey on Friday, announced the newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen on the basis of information from a Turkish media. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this information on Saturday.

The accident happened in the village of Yenikapi, less than 200 kilometers southwest of Ankara. The two children, aged 3 and 13, were on holiday there with their family, according to the Gazet van Antwerpen.

Taking advantage of a moment of inattention, the 13-year-old girl went for a quad ride, taking her three-year-old brother with her. The Gazet van Antwerpen, citing an anonymous source, specifies that the girl had already driven a quad during her travels. However, she left the roads she knew and found herself on a steeply sloping street where she lost control of the vehicle. The quad would have hit a wall at full speed. Both victims were taken to hospital and died there, according to the newspaper. They were buried in Türkiye on Saturday followingnoon.

Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of the two children. Local authorities informed the Belgian embassy in Ankara regarding the accident on Saturday, foreign affairs spokesman Nicolas Fierens Gevaert said.
