3 boats sank off the coast of Sfax, while the Tunisian authorities announced the recovery of 3 bodies, including two infants, the loss of 12 migrants, and the rescue of 152 others from sub-Saharan African countries.
This came in statements by the representative of the republic, spokesman for the Court of First Instance in Sfax, Fawzi Al-Masmoudi, which was transmitted by the private radio “Mosaique”, on Thursday evening.
He added that “the first boat set off from the coasts of Al-Lozeh in the state of Sfax, and 39 passers-by (immigrants) were rescued on board, while the number of missing persons reached 7, including an infant.”
Al-Masmoudi continued: “The second sunken boat set off from the coast of Al-Lawata within the state of Sfax, and 83 people on board were rescued, and two infant bodies were recovered.”
He stated that “the third boat sailed from the coast of Al-Lawata as well, and 30 passengers on board were rescued, and the body of an elderly person was recovered, while 5, including children, are still missing.”
Recently, Tunisia witnessed a remarkable increase in the rate of irregular migration to Europe, especially towards the coasts of Italy, due to the repercussions of the economic and political crises in the country and a number of countries in the region.
