In the midst of the commotion over the crime of Valentina Cancela, the 17-year-old girl murdered on a beach in Punta del Este, Uruguay, some images of a WhatsApp chat between the alleged perpetrator of the femicide and a friend of the victim went viral. , in which the teenager pretends to worry regarding the girl’s absence, when he had already killed her.

As can be read in the photo, which is actually a collage of screenshots of the conversation, shortly following the family reported the disappearance to the police, a friend of the teenager wrote to Santino G., ex-boyfriend of the victim, to ask him if he knew anything regarding her whereregardings, to which the young man, who is also 17 years old, replied that he was unaware of the situation, and even offered his help to find her.

“He doesn’t answer you either? Has he already answered?” Santino asked the girl he calls “Isa” hours following committing the crime. In turn, the adolescent hid his responsibility by indicating that he was at home with his father, and as proof, he sent her a photo, smiling and raising his thumb.

“(Do you have) news?”, the young man insists, and minutes later he adds: “Let’s go look for her.”

The confession and the discovery of the body

Valentina lived in Punta del Este and was in the fifth year of morning high school at a school in that Uruguayan city. According to statements by her relatives and close friends to the local media, she “went back and forth” from a love relationship with Santino G., a young man of the same age and from the same town, but everyone knew that it was a toxic bond. . In fact, the young man accumulated complaints of gender violence.

On Tuesday, August 15, following school, Cancela went to the Plata Brava boulevard in that town, and since then she has been missing. Her family filed a police report and the search began.

The next day, at 11 a.m., Valentina’s backpack was found buried in the sand with her belongings and school materials, but her cell phone was missing, which had been turned off since 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the security cameras of the Municipality of Maldonado recorded the minor entering the beach with her ex-partner around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, but two hours later, the only one who leaves that place is the young man. This is why Santino G. was considered the main suspect.

After noon on Wednesday, the teenager confessed to having murdered the young woman, and led the police to the place where the lifeless body was found. Around 6:20 p.m., the Police and prosecutor Jorge Vaz found Valentina’s remains half-buried in a dune.

The alleged femicide testified before the Justice

After appearing before the San Carlos court this Thursday at noon, prosecutor Jorge Vaz charged Santino G. with femicide and ordered his hospitalization at the National Institute for Adolescent Social Inclusion (Inisa), in Montevideo, until the sentence is handed down. The Observer reported.

As described by the Uruguayan outlet, the adolescent who confessed to having murdered and concealed the body of Valentina Cancela arrived at the judicial headquarters following 1:30 p.m. hooded, with a bulletproof vest and a police cordon around the entrance of the building.

Prosecutor Vaz had indicated at a press conference that the minor was “attributable as an adolescent offender”, something that can lead to a “custodial sentence”.

For this reason, he announced that he will request the “maximum penalty” for Santino G., according to what the spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office, Javier Benech, declared today to the Arriba gente program on Channel 10.

In this sense, the Uruguayan newspaper Underlined reported that the maximum sentence for a minor in that country is five years, except for crimes of homicide especially aggravated by femicide, as in this case, where deprivation of liberty may be of a maximum of 10 years, as established by current regulations.

Once the final judicial sentence is received, you must serve the entire sentence. Meanwhile, this medium details, upon reaching the age of majority, he will not be sent to a prison for the elderly because the Uruguayan Penal Code prohibits it, so he must finish his sentence at INISA, if he entered as a minor.

“The adolescent who, upon reaching 18 years of age, remains subject to measures, will in no case comply with what is left of him in detention facilities for adults,” the regulations indicate.
