Tragic Murder of Ugandan Olympic Athlete Benjamin Kiplagat: Details and Updates

[Tilu News]Benjamin Kiplagat, a Ugandan 3000-meter obstacle course runner who has participated in three Olympic Games, was found murdered following being suspected of being robbed while training in Kenya last Saturday (30th). His body was found in his brother’s private car. He was 34 years old.

Kiplagat, the 2008 World Youth Championship silver medalist, has participated in three Olympic track and field 3000-meter obstacle races in 2008, 2012 and 2016, and six World Athletics Championships. Kiplagat was originally scheduled to return to his home country to compete following training in Eldoret, Kenya. However, last Sunday (31st), he was found lying dead in his brother’s private car with a wound on his neck. He suffered a deep stab wound, and his money and phone were missing. The Kenyan police also arrested two suspects 3 days later.

After the news of Kiplagat’s death came out, World Athletics immediately issued a condolence message on social platforms, “World Athletics was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Kiplagat’s passing. We express our condolences to him. My deepest condolences to my friends, family, teammates and athletes.”
