Five migrants died on Sunday as they tried to cross into Britain from northern France in freezing weather. The French Maritime Authority said the sixth was in critical condition. More than 30 people were rescued, the Maritime Prefecture said in a statement. These were the first migrant deaths reported on the channel in 2024. Four migrants died overnight. A fifth body was found on the beach, officials said.

The group was traveling by boat from the resort town of Vimarrex at around 2am when the boat broke down. The boat overturned due to rough seas and high tide. At the time of the accident, some people had escaped from the boat. The preliminary conclusion of the police is that the deceased are youths of Syrian origin. Along with the dead, unconscious people were also found during the rescue operation.

The survivors were moved to a shelter in Calais. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Experts say it might be drowning or thermal shock.

In the current situation, the risk of accidents is very high for migrants trying to travel on large ships. said Jean-Claude Lenoir, head of Salam Association. Figures indicate that 12 migrants lost their lives trying to cross the Channel in 2023. In 2023, 30,000 migrants have crossed the Channel from Europe to Britain in small boats.
