The School of Law of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico (PUCPR) today mourned the death of two of its former students and distinguished them “for their leadership and pioneering pride.”
These are Michael Orozco Marín and his wife María Martínez Vázquez, who along with Ramón Martínez and Awilda Vázquez died this past weekend when a concrete wall fell on top of the car they were in in the Dominican Republic. Martínez Vázquez was pregnant.
Orozco Marín graduated from the aforementioned institution with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Law, and Martínez Vázquez obtained his Juris Doctor degree.

“Our University is moved by the tragedy of losing these two young Puerto Rican alumni and professionals, along with their unborn baby. We ask the Comforting Holy Spirit to strengthen your family and our community. Only He can provide comfort in this period of silence, sadness and emptiness when we face the questions that crowd our spirit,” said the president of the PUCPR, Dr. Jorge Iván Vélez Arocho.
“Michael and María left an indelible mark on our academic community, standing out for their joy, camaraderie and the love they had and showed for each other. His academic, professional and personal achievements were a reflection of his commitment to the values that we represent as an Institution,” indicated the dean of the PUCPR Law School, Mr. Fernando Moreno Orama.
Recent reports indicate that problems in the design, plus the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the water accumulated by the heavy rains caused by a tropical disturbance, would have caused the collapse of the wall that ended the lives of four Puerto Ricans, including the couple that today remembers the PUCPR.
“It has weaknesses in the design, that anchors were not placed and that is why the wall collapsed,” Cristian Rojas, former president of the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (CODIA), told The Associated Press on Monday.
The death toll as a result of the rains in the neighboring country is 24.
