Tragic landslide at a Ugandan garbage dump

NAIROBI (EFE).— At least eight people died and 14 were injured yesterday after a structural failure caused a landslide at the Kiteezi landfill on the outskirts of Kampala, the capital of Uganda, local authorities reported, as rescue efforts continue.

“The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Kiteezi landfill site this morning suffered a structural failure in the waste mass which has caused a section of the landfill to collapse,” KCCA, which manages the dump, said in a statement released on X.

Six adults and two children were killed, while 14 injured people were rescued and evacuated to Mulago and St. Stephen hospitals in the Ugandan capital.

The search and rescue operation is continuing in case there are more people buried under the rubbish and to prevent further incidents, the KCCA said.

The rescue team is involved in the KCCA emergency teams, the Uganda Police, personnel from the Ministries of Works and Transport, Disaster Preparedness, the Red Cross and civil society.

Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago warned last January of the danger posed by the dump and that a disaster would occur, according to the Daily Monitor.

Since 1996, the Kiteezi landfill, which covers more than 14.5 hectares, has been the site of all the rubbish from the five districts of the Ugandan capital.
