At least 10 other people were injured. Most of the victims are from Venezuela. Authorities are investigating whether the event was intentional.
Eight people died and at least 10 were injured this Sunday (05.07.2023) in the city of Brownsville, Texas, on the border with Mexico, when they were hit by a vehicle in front of a migrant reception center, police said.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and received treatment. He will be prosecuted for dangerous driving, but could face other charges, according to authorities, who have launched an investigation to determine whether the incident was accidental or intentional. The center’s director, Victor Maldonado, explained that most of the fatalities are Venezuelan men.
The incident takes place as the United States authorities prepare to lift a health measure known as “Title 42“, which because of the COVID-19 pandemic has allowed border patrol agents to deport or turn away migrants without even accepting their asylum claims.
The homeless center in front of which the incident occurred on Sunday is currently receiving migrants due to “the current influx” of people crossing the border from Mexico, police said.
