AUSTIN: Three Florida hog hunters and their dog died in an underground tank, a Texas sheriff said. One of them had climbed into the tank to save his dog following it fell through a hole in the top of the underground tank. The other two went down to the underground tank to rescue him.

It is a tank regarding 4 feet (1.2 m) wide and 8 feet (2.4 m) deep, containing water and hydrogen sulfide gas.

One of the men went down into the reservoir to save the dog. The clothes and boots of two other hunters were found near the hole of the tank. The deceased were identified as Delvis Garcia (37), Denis Martinez and Noel Vigil Benitez. All are from Florida.

Bastrop County Sheriff Maurice Cook said the reservoir contained high levels of hydrogen sulfide.

The dive team’s concern regarding gas in the tank hampered recovery efforts, but the bodies were later recovered. The sheriff’s office said there was heavy smoke in the tank.
