Firefighters from the Hesbaye Meuse Condroz emergency zone (Hemeco) were called Tuesday evening at 11:52 p.m. for a major building fire in the center of the Meuse city. An officer discovered four minutes later a single-family house on fire on rue des Crépalles.
During rescue operations, the bodies of six occupants of the home were extracted. They are those of a family made up of four children and their parents.
The parents, Martine and Robert, as well as their four daughters Tatiana (5 years old), Olivia (8 years old), Natacha (10 years old) and Mélissa (14 years old), unfortunately did not survive; they died in the fire. Our colleagues from L’Avenir interviewed those close to the family.
“It was a normal, uneventful family,” explains Odette, Martine’s aunt. “I spoke to her on the phone once more 15 days ago and everything was going very well. Martine and her entire family had been living in Huy for more than ten years old. Even if life was not easy, the children lacked nothing. Martine very often went to the playground to have fun. She did not have a car, but she devoted herself without counting to her beautiful small family. I don’t know what happened, no one meant them any harm. Two years ago, our family had already been bereaved by the loss of my brother. Here, it’s the hammer blow. I heard the news this morning while watching the news, I was completely shocked.”
“She wore her heart on her sleeve”
Isabelle Daniels was Martine’s friend, “the best friend” even, she slips. “We had been friends for a long time, for at least 15 years. I lived opposite her house on rue des Crépalles. Martine and her family had lived there for a long time, they were tenants in their house.” When Isabelle left rue des Crépalles to settle in rue Sous-le-Château, she did not lose contact with her friend. “I also knew Mr. and the children. Our children went to school together, they also went to Red Falcons activities. I never lost contact, she was my best friend. I have her in fact followed during the delivery of her youngest, I went with her to the consultations.”
Martine was kindness itself. “Their children were super polite, I never had any problems with them.” Martine no longer worked, she took care of her man who had back and leg problems. She took care of the four girls and always participated in the extracurricular activities set up at Sainte-Claire school. “She took care of the whole family, she took care of everything. When she went to get food at Saint-Vincent de Paul, she always took an extra loaf of bread for me. She had her heart on her sleeve, always for help everyone.” Today, Isabelle Daniels says she is “sad, shocked”. And she adds: “I really want to know what happened…”
