Texas : Three hog hunters from Florida and their dog died in an underground tank filled with sewage gas in the middle of a cornfield, a Texas sheriff said, following one of them climbed into the tank to save his dog following it fell through a hole in the top of the underground tank. Two others went down to the underground tank to rescue him. Bastrop County Sheriff Maurice Cook said the hole was regarding 4 feet (1.2 meters) wide and contained 8 feet (2.4 meters) of water and hydrogen sulfide gas. The bodies of two men, a woman and a dog were later recovered from the tank.
He said the incident happened around midnight on Wednesday when one of the men went down into the reservoir to rescue the dog. Two other hunters’ clothes and boots were found near the hole. Delvis Garcia, 37, was killed. Denise Martinez, 26; Noel Vigil-Benitez, 45. All from Florida.
Cook said the reservoir has “high levels” of hydrogen sulfide. He said stagnant water and the decay of other animals that had previously died in the pond might create deadly levels. The hunting party included a fourth person from Texas who did not jump into the hole. Cook said the hunter told authorities the dog escaped from their truck and they tracked it using a device on the dog’s collar.
Concerns from dive teams regarding the gas and the details of the structure’s walls hampered efforts to recover the bodies, he said. A statement from the sheriff’s office said the tank contained “strong fumes similar to a septic tank.”
