The 31-year-old was hiking the Marufo Vega trail on Friday with his two stepsons, ages 14 and 21. According to the National Park Service, the mercury reached 48 degrees at the time. In the park, as in other parts of Texas, extreme temperatures have fluctuated between 43 and 48 degrees in recent days.

The 14-year-old boy collapsed during the walk and lost consciousness, park officials said. His stepfather returned to their vehicle for help, while his brother attempted to drive him back to the trailhead.

A team of rangers and US Border Patrol agents arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m. and discovered the young victim dead along the trail. A search was then launched to find the father. His vehicle was found on an embankment. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

“The Marufo Vega Trail winds through extremely rugged desert and rocky cliffs in the hottest part of Big Bend National Park. Since there is no shade or water anywhere, the hellish temperatures make this hike very dangerous,” the park service said in a news release.
