(Agence France-Presse, Guyana’s capital, George Town, 23rd) A fire broke out in a school dormitory in central Guyana over the weekend, killing 19 minors. Government sources revealed today that the tragedy arose when a schoolgirl complained that her mobile phone had been confiscated.
“A schoolgirl was suspected of starting the devastating fire following her mobile phone was confiscated,” the police confirmed in an official report.
The teenage schoolgirl, who has confessed to the arson attack, is under police custody at a regional hospital in Mahdia town, officials said.
Police are seeking advice on whether to press charges once morest her, officials said.
The fire that broke out on the 21st destroyed a building where girls aged 11 and 12 and 16 and 17 lived.
In addition to the 19 people who were buried in the fire cave, regarding 20 children were sent to the hospital for treatment, and 2 of them were dying.
“They (staff) took the girl’s phone away and the girl threatened to burn down the building that night and everyone heard it,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Minutes later, the girl entered the bathroom, sprayed insecticide on one of the curtains and lit a match, government officials said.
A female tutor told the police that the dormitory would be locked at night. When the fire broke out, she panicked and mightn’t find the key to the front door. Metal bars were installed on the windows of the building to prevent students from running out. Police said there were 57 students in the dormitory at the time.
