Initially, the Murcia City Council confirmed the death of four people at the premises, located in the Atalayas area, but then revised the balance upwards.
“We regret to inform you that the deaths in the Atalayas fire amount to 13 people. The emergency services continue working in the area,” wrote the mayor of the town, José Ballesta, on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
A total of 40 firefighters in 12 vehicles and 18 local police officers were mobilized to extinguish the fire.
The injured were taken to area hospitals and firefighters continue working to clarify the number of missing people.
The authorities set up an area in the Sport’s palacewhere relatives and affected people will have a space with psychological support and specialized units in emergency cases.
The mayor of Murcia declared three days of official mourning for those who died in the fire at the Teatre nightclub, suspended the entire agenda of events scheduled for this Sunday and conveyed, on behalf of the entire Municipal Corporation, condolences to the family and friends of the victims.
Decorated like a baroque theater, the Teatre nightclub was one of the most emblematic nightlife venues in the city.
The acting president of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sanchezexpressed his solidarity with the people of Murcia as a result of the tragedy.
“My love and solidarity with the victims and families of the tragic fire that occurred this morning in a nightclub in Murcia. I have just conveyed to the president of the Region of Murcia all our support and collaboration. Thanks to the emergency services deployed at the scene for their work,” Sánchez published on his social networks.
