According to the Public Ministry, some of the deaths were the result of burns from the fire and others from firearm injuries.

The spokesman for the Honduran Public Ministry, Yuri Mora, told CNN en Español that prosecutorial teams counted at least 41 people dead in the Támara women’s prison and that they continue to work, which might increase the number.

Earlier, the Undersecretary of Security and also in charge of intervention in Honduran prisons, Julissa Villanueva, reported acts of vandalism in that prison, located in the department of Francisco Morazán.

He also said that he had responded with a “strong hand.”

“We are not going to tolerate acts of vandalism or irregularities (…) Immediate intervention is authorized with the accompaniment of firefighters, police and military; an emergency is declared,” added Villanueva.

According to Mora, some of the deaths were the result of burns from the fire and others from gunshot wounds.

The main healthcare center in Tegucigalpa has received several injured people.
