Tragic Fate: African Immigrants Crossing the Mediterranean and the Drowned Migrants Caught in Fishermen’s Nets

African immigrants bet on crossing the Mediterranean towards Europe in the hope of a better life, but many end up drowning in a tragic fate.

One of the images of that tragedy is that a fisherman in Tunisia threw his net into the sea water, and then he pulled out bodies of drowned migrants, instead of fish.

Fisherman Osama Al-Dabibi, 30, says that he is now fishing on the eastern coast of the country, and he does not know what will be caught in the net.

The BBC quoted the fisherman as saying that he had recently found the bodies of 15 migrants in fishing nets in the waters near the city of Sfax, within just three days.

Worse than that, the fisherman found the body of a young infant, and he might not hold back his tears, and began to cry in front of the horror of what he saw.

Osama adds that he has been fishing in these waters since he was ten years old, but he did not witness tragedies of this magnitude.

He added that a number of his fellow fishermen sold their boats to smugglers so that they would use them to transport clandestine migrants, even offering sums described as rewarding.

Osama continued that he repeatedly refused to sell his boat, and the reason is that he feared that someone on board would drown, “and then, I will never forgive myself.”
