Around 8:30 a.m., a 33-year-old man died on the A9 motorway. Later in the day, around 2:40 p.m., an 82-year-old man did not survive following leaving the road near Coustouges.

Dark day on the roads of Aude. This Thursday, February 29, two people died while driving, both victims of traffic accidents. A very heavy toll for two distinct circumstances, but with an equally fatal outcome.

This Thursday, around 8:30 a.m., it was a 33-year-old motorist, traveling on the A9 motorway towards Perpignan, who hit the rear of a heavy goods vehicle in front of him, crashing into its trailer. . The facts occurred near La Palme: note that the truck itself was in circulation, and was not stationary as part of the “storage” of heavy goods vehicles linked to the blocking of the border with Spain. Eleven rescuers went to the scene, part of the Leucate fire brigade and the Narbonne Smur. Despite their mobilization, they unfortunately did not manage to save the driver. The intervention of the emergency services did not cause an interruption of traffic, it having continued (with a few slowdowns) thanks to protection of the accident zone.

Later in the day, at 2:40 p.m., a single vehicle left the road in the Coustouges area. Ten men from the Saint-Laurent and Fabrezan firefighters intervened, as did the Carcassonne Smur. Here once more, and despite the device and the efforts made, the driver did not survive. He was 82 years old.

Gendarmerie investigations will determine the exact causes of these two tragedies, which bring the number of deaths on Aude’s roads to five since the start of 2024. In 2023, 29 people lost their lives on the department’s roads.
