A road accident occurred Monday morning in Brunehaut, in the Tournai region, where a motorist hit a tree. The victim was already dead when help arrived, firefighters said.
The emergency services of Picardy Wallonia were alerted on Monday, at 4:45 a.m., that a serious traffic accident had occurred along rue de Tournai (RN507), between Hollain and Bléharies, in the entity of Brunehaut. An extrication vehicle, a marking truck, an SMUR, an ambulance and a command vehicle were dispatched to the scene.
The accident took place in the Hollain-Bléharies direction in a portion of the national road where the speed is authorized at 90 km/h. For a reason that the investigation will have to try to determine, a motorist who was heading towards France lost control of his car. After swerving, the vehicle ended up hitting a tree.
“When we arrived on site, the driver had already died. The driver, the only one involved and the only one in his car, had to be extricated. He is a man aged around fifty years old. He was driving a car registered in Belgium, explained shortly following 2:00 p.m. Lieutenant Patrice Ratte who led the intervention.
Following this accident, this important traffic route coming and going to France was cut off to traffic by police officers from the Tournaisis area. Diversions have been put in place via secondary roads.
