It was Wednesday evening around 5 p.m. that a man was fatally mowed down in Neupré. A vehicle indeed hit a pedestrian, in circumstances which remain to be determined. We know more regarding the victim: the pedestrian who lost his life is a 44-year-old from Nandrines, Sébastien Bekaert, who had just moved to the town only a few months ago.
His loved ones are devastated and speak of a boy who did not always have an easy life but who was courageous and sensitive. “He was abandoned by his mother when he was just a few weeks old and suffered from it all his life, explains her cousin, Isabelle. It was my grandmother who raised him, spoiled him, pampered him, with a loving father and a caring stepmother. He was surrounded by a large, wonderful family. He never found love and suffered from deep loneliness.”
Everyone salutes his determination and passion in his work. “From the age of 14, he was already on the roofs with his dad who was his God. Sébastien was physically strong as an ox but very sensitive. He was always there to be of service to his family.” The Nandrinois was also a big fan of The Simpsons and never stingy with parties, jokes and humor. “He loved to tease.” He was also a very honest man. “A few hours before the tragedy, he found a wallet and returned it to its owner.
Today, the investigation continues. Initial evidence indicates that the driver was not intoxicated. Obviously, visibility was poor and the driver would not have seen the Nandrinois, hitting him.
