The body of a 21-year-old hiker cannot be brought home following he fell 90 to 150 meters down a rocky ravine in front of his girlfriend, only to end up stranded in an area “impossible” to reach on foot.
“It’s devastating not being able to bring Joel home. After the search was completed, some of Joel’s family and friends went to the mountain to try to find him. Joel was a person who loved the outdoors,” reads a crowdfunding campaign set up Friday to provide a scholarship in his memory.

Last Monday, 21-year-old Joel Tranby was climbing the North Sister in Oregon’s Cascade Range when he reportedly fell regarding 90 meters for the first time, past his girlfriend Fiona Curley, who was accompanying him, The Independent reported on Saturday.
Seriously injured, the young man was then still able to speak while his girlfriend was busy calling the emergency room.
But now regarding two hours later, the young woman would have lost track of her boyfriend following he suffered a second fall.
In the following days, drone and helicopter searches were carried out in the area “impossible” to reach on foot, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, in an attempt to locate the young man. He was finally seen Thursday without life.
While expert climbers had been consulted to “determine whether a recovery mission might be carried out safely”, according to the statement originally shared by The Independent, the victim’s family eventually let it be known that “it is likely that they will not be able to recover the body”.
