Rebecca Cheptegei, who represented Uganda in the marathon at the Paris Olympics a few weeks ago, died of her burns.
The 33-year-old Cheptegei was the victim of an attack on Sunday after she returned home from church with her two children. A former friend poured gasoline on her from a can and then lit it on fire. Eighty percent of Cheptegei’s body was burned. He was treated in the intensive care unit of the Eldoret hospital, but they could not save his life, his organs stopped working on Wednesday evening, according to hospital director Owen Menach.
The attacker, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, also suffered burns and is currently being treated at the same hospital. About 30 percent of his body was burned.

According to the father of the runner, Mzee Joseph Cheptegei, the victim and the attacker used to be friends, and they had been living separately for a long time. According to him, a fight broke out between them because of his daughter’s land, but he did not understand why Marangach applied for other people’s property.
He claimed they were fighting over his daughter’s land in Endebes, Trans Nzoia, where the attack took place. “They were just friends and I wonder why he wanted to take things that belonged to my daughter,” stated Mzee Cheptegei.
Rebecca Cheptegei started competing in 2010, specializing in long distances, half marathons, and marathons, but she also competed in cross-country races. In 2022, she also became the first female winner of the World Mountain Running Championships. He was able to stand on the podium in several city marathons, for example in Padua and Florence, he was 44th in this distance at this year’s Olympics, and he was 14th last year at the World Championships in Budapest.
