“At 12:10 he decided to cross the river with another person, but he mightn’t get there because he was too tired, so he tried to retrace his steps, but at middle of the river, the current was really strong. He walked past us, he tried to ask for help, but we weren’t able to do anything in front of him,” he said.
The two men had done everything together since their arrival in the country.
“It was like a brother, since we arrived in Canada, 20 years ago, we know each other. He was always with me, even the day before yesterday he was at home and we were talking. He was 32 years old, he was very young and had two children,” he said.
After seeing it carried away by the current, he and some friends stayed near the river in the hope of finding it quickly.
“We stayed until midnight last night to try to see. After that, the diving team came back, but they found nothing. We came back today,” said Mr. Garzon.
The images of his crossing will remain etched in his memory.
“We weren’t able to sleep last night,” he said still in shock.
