Tragic Deaths in Buenos Aires Sewage Pumping Well: Investigating the Cause

Six people died inside a sewage pumping well in the Buenos Aires town of Blaquier, in the Florentino Ameghino district.

The tragic event occurred this Friday afternoon when a firefighter hired by the municipality to carry out maintenance tasks at the well known in that town as “el cigarro” went down without a protective mask and was unable to get out. Due to this situation, five people, including three volunteer firefighters, tried to rescue him, but were unable to get out.

The main hypothesis is that the deaths occurred due to the gases produced by the sewage liquid and accumulated in the place about 12 meters deep, which would have caused suffocation. Another hypothesis that was also being investigated is that an electric shock could have occurred at the site.

The victims, according to the local prisoner, are Ricardo Bottega, 60 years old, who was the first to enter the well; volunteer firefighters Carlos Renger (39), Mateo Pellgrino (27) and Nicolás Sánchez (28); Alejandro Centeno, 36 years old; and Juan Ramón Sanchez, 50, Nicolás’ father.

Some of them died in the well, while another died on the way to the Florentino Ameghino hospital.

This Saturday morning autopsies were performed to determine the causes of death and preliminary results. As reported by the municipality of Ameghino, the deaths were due to “mechanical asphyxiation due to bronchoaspiration.”
