Tragic Deaths at Tomorrowland 2023: The Dark Side of the World’s Most Popular Music Festival

2023-07-30 12:21:00

While the 2023 edition of the Tomorrowland festival will close this Sunday, July 30, two people have died this year.

After the tragic disappearance of a 26-year-old Tomorrowland employee who was found dead on the campsite reserved for staff – and of which we do not yet know if it is linked to drug use -, a 35-year-old festival-goer has, for his hand, was found unconscious on Friday evening in an area reserved for VIPs. Supported by the emergency services, he was transported to hospital, where he died.

“The circumstances of the death are not yet known,” said a spokeswoman for the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. “Additional homework is necessary.” An investigating judge was seized and requested an autopsy “to determine the cause of death” of the thirties.

70,000 festival-goers present this Sunday

“What happened is unfortunately very sad. The festival has lost one of its participants and our thoughts are obviously with the family and loved ones,” Tomorrowland spokesperson Debby Wilmsen told RTLInfo. “We are going to make sure that this last day is a great closing day of the festival since 70,000 people are present to attend.”

And the spokeswoman added: “It is difficult to prevent this kind of incident. Drugs are a problem for society, for living together. There are tens of thousands of people here every day. What we can do is raise awareness, inform, carry out checks. The police are there for that.”

Five people have died at Tomorrowland since 2018.
