Ann and Kris are both in their fifties. Originally from Geel, near Antwerp, they have loved each other since adolescence and have never left each other.
This Tuesday, having just arrived on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands for their holidays, the couple hastened to start a hike in the mountainous region of Guia de Isora. Accustomed to long walks, the two lovers managed to cover the first three kilometers without difficulty… Until, suddenly, Ann collapsed. Panicked, her husband tried to contact the emergency services but the language barrier prevented him from being understood quickly. “We lost precious time, maybe 45 minutes”he tells our colleagues at HLN.
“Very difficult”
Kris therefore decided to go himself to seek help for “The love of his life” and left her where she fell – “I had to leave it there because I mightn’t carry it. It was very hard” – and brought her to safety in the shade, although the track of heatstroke was quickly dismissed by the Belgian tourist. “It was hot, yes. But not 44 degrees, as some write….”he says. “It was cooler up there. There was even a nice breeze.”
Help was contacted by a neighbor. While waiting for their arrival, Kris tried to revive his wife… in vain. It was by helicopter that the 50-year-old was taken to a nearby village to be examined. But he was already too late.
According to the doctors on site, Ann died of a heart attack. “I do not know what happened”, continues the widower, in deep state of shock. Kris and her daughter, who arrived urgently on the island, should return to Belgium this Friday.

Known in the industry for their fruit and vegetable store, tributes for Ann are already raining down on the store’s Facebook page. “Always friendly, we had a good laugh, rest in peace”, “I’m still shocked, I can’t get over it”, “We lost a star”, can we read in particular in the comments.
No information on the repatriation of the body has been communicated.
