Leah Rogers was 17 years old when she decided to take a trip alone, far from her home and without her parents. The teenager from Wales, who planned to train as an intensive care nurse, found death following that vacation, without knowing that a severe sore throat would become an irremediable case.

Kath, her mother, indicated that following her other daughter declined the idea of making the trip, she did not welcome Leah making the trip alone. That is why they accepted that she be accompanied by her sister’s friends.

After her return, Leah said that she had fun and had a great time, although she had a pain in her throat that did not subside.

Her parents took her to the doctor and there they prescribed a series of medications. However, following two weeks the situation worsened: “It got to the point where she accidentally overdosed on paracetamol because she was taking too many painkillers,” Kath explained in conversation with WalesOnline.

After days of seeing no improvement in his condition, he was prescribed a different course of antibiotics. “It’s like all of that had to happen,” Kath said when they returned to the hospital together to get another prescription.

“We thought we would finally see an improvement, so we felt a little calmer. But on Tuesday he started to feel pain in his abdomen. When the doctors came to see her they immediately told her that she had glandular fever,” Kath explained.

The 57-year-old woman maintained that at that point Leah was not eating or drinking due to her sore throat. The doctors agreed that as soon as she might drink and eat she might go home, but before – due to severe pain near her liver – she was still taken to Leah for blood tests.

The news they received following those tests was devastating: Leah was diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, an immunodeficiency disorder in which the body cannot fight infections as it should.

“Basically, there was no more treatment they might give him. “I arranged for someone to take care of my other children because we didn’t know how much time he had left, but it wasn’t much,” Kath said.

“We made the heartbreaking decision to begin tapering off the medication. They then stopped life support and within minutes she was gone. It was around three in the morning. “We thought we might have had days, but they turned into hours.”

Leah died when she was three months shy of her 18th birthday. Kath indicated that she was relieved to know that Leah received good medical care before the family learned the seriousness of the situation: “It comforts us to know that she was not scared or awake when they told us there was nothing they might do for her.”

“Actually, everything happened very quickly. It was absolutely devastating. We have since returned and I made arrangements to go see the consultant at Bridgend hospital,” Kath said.

“You never expect to lose your child. It is the most difficult thing that exists. I don’t know if we’ll ever get over it. It’s the worst thing you can imagine. We have simply had to learn to live with this as best we can,” the woman concluded.
