Veggiano – The death of a five-year-old girl, Beatrice Angela Gobbo, shocks Veneto. After feeling unwell on New Year’s Day and suffering from a fever shortly afterwards, the five-year-old’s parents decided to take her to the Padua hospital. There her health deteriorated rapidly. For three days, doctors in the pediatric intensive care unit at University Hospital fought for Beatrice’s young life, but on January 4, her little heart stopped beating.

According to initial assumptions, the girl was fatally affected by a simultaneous attack by four viruses, which led to multiple organ failure. It is currently being investigated whether there is a connection between her father’s flu illness on December 30th and the girl’s tragic death.

Until this illness, which was fatal for the child, nothing seemed to be able to dampen the happiness of the Gobbo family from Veggiano near Padua. Five-year-old Beatrice Angela Gobbo, her mother Francesca and her father Giovanni, both 43 years old, formed a beautiful nuclear family. Shortly before the turn of the year, however, the misfortune took its disastrous course.

On the evening of December 31st, the New Year’s Eve celebration was to take place in the Gobbo family’s house in Veggiano, to which two other couples and their children, including Beatrice’s best friends, were also invited. However, on December 30, Beatrice’s father, Giovanni, was struck by the flu, forcing him to stay in bed. It was therefore decided to move the celebration to the house of one of the other two families. While Giovanni, who suffered from fever and other flu symptoms, had to stay at home, Beatrice and her mother Francesca went to the other family’s house to celebrate the New Year with the remaining participants.

They returned home around 1:30 a.m. On the afternoon of New Year’s Day, the family went to the cinema. On the way home, Beatrice said she felt unwell. A little later, the little girl began to have an increasingly severe fever, which was accompanied by chills. When her deeply concerned parents called the pediatric emergency room, they were told that their daughter needed to be taken to the hospital immediately for an evaluation. Meanwhile, the five-year-old’s health deteriorated. The emergency doctor, who arrived in Veggiano with his team a short time later, managed to stabilize Beatrice before driving her to the hospital.

For three days, doctors in the pediatric intensive care unit of the University Hospital of Padua fought for Beatrice’s young life. But several complications arose within the first few hours. Among other things, a cerebral hemorrhage was controlled with a few transfusions, which briefly stabilized her situation again. But Beatrice had no chance against the four viruses whose simultaneous attack was initially suspected to have been responsible for the little girl’s death. She was pronounced dead at 12:45 p.m. on January 4th.

The grieving parents gave their consent to the organ removal, but clinical examinations showed that the viruses that had affected Beatrice Angela had irreparably damaged all of her organs. In order to clarify the exact cause of death and other questions relating to the course of the disease, an autopsy was carried out in the meantime.

The question also needs to be answered as to whether her father’s flu illness that occurred on December 30th could have anything to do with the girl’s tragic death. According to doctors, there was no connection between Beatrice’s death and the seasonal flu. Rather, her death was caused by these four yet-to-be-identified viruses that attacked her organs and caused a cerebral hemorrhage.

The funeral will take place on Friday in the Basilica of Santa Giustina in Padua. The family does not ask for flowers, but rather a donation to the Salus Pueri Foundation for projects in favor of the children’s department of the University Hospital of Padua. There is great sadness over the death of little Beatrice far beyond small Veggiano near Padua. Answering the question of what caused the little girl’s death should help prevent such tragedies from now on.
