A firefighter has died in Canada battling megawildfires ravaging the country, the Premier of British Columbia announced on Saturday. This is the fourth death of a firefighter fighting wildfires in Canada this summer.
Earlier this month, a helicopter pilot died in the crash of his plane in Alberta, in the West of the country, fighting once morest the fires which ravage the country, following the death of two other firefighters in two operations distinct. “I am devastated to hear that we have lost another firefighter,” Premier David Eby said in a statement, lamenting “terrible news” and a “deeply horrifying” wildfire season.
More than 990 fires in Canada currently
“This tragic news reminds us once once more of the extraordinary sacrifices they (the firefighters, editor’s note) are making to ensure our safety,” he added. The victim was a contract firefighter responding to the Donnie Creek wildfire near Fort St John in the northeast of the province.
British Columbia currently has 368 active fires. In total, more than 990 fires have ravaged Canada, including 613 deemed to be out of control. More than 12 million hectares have already burned this year, a total far greater than anything the country has ever seen.
Canada, which due to its geographical location is warming faster than the rest of the planet, has been confronted in recent years with extreme weather events whose intensity and frequency have been increased by climate change.
