A Cuban migrant who was in Mexico and had requested to be returned to the island died this Thursday, according to the National Migration Institute (INM).
In a statement published on its official website, the INM reported the death of “a person of Cuban nationality, during the transfer from the Siglo XXI Immigration Station to the Cofat AC Hospital, in Tapachula, Chiapas.”
According to the information offered, on the followingnoon of November 14, this person arrived at the Immigration Station facilities to request – voluntarily – to return to Cuba.
When he entered the immigration headquarters, a medical evaluation was carried out, as part of the legal procedures, “without data of any illness being presented,” refers the text.
Likewise, they specify that the Cuban assured “he did not have chronic conditions” and that at that time, “the Public Defender Institute assigned him a representative to accompany him during the corresponding administrative procedure.”
A day later, during the night of November 15, the migrant said he felt ill and was assisted by the medical staff of the Immigration Station.
“During the morning of this Thursday, November 16, moments before returning to Cuba, he was treated once more when he expressed discomfort. After being assessed as clinically stable, he returned to his home; However, it was determined to postpone his return to the country of origin,” says the INM.

According to the note, minutes later, the doctors decided to evaluate him once more in the living area and detected that he had “weak vital signs.” Then, they had to start first aid maneuvers to urgently transfer him to the Cofat AC Hospital, located less than 200 meters from the Immigration Station.
“The doctors on duty at the Cofat AC Hospital no longer identify vital signs in the foreign person. The local ministerial authority was notified, as part of the legal procedures to determine the causes of death,” the immigration authority reported.
The INM, in its note, regrets the death of the Cuban and guarantees that “they will be aware of the results of the autopsy and will maintain communication and coordination with the respective consular representation.”
