A 20-year-old young man died on the night of Saturday to Sunday, following finding himself in difficulty in the sea in Ostend, the Bruges section of the West Flanders prosecutor’s office said on Sunday. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the death.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m., near the western dike. The young man, from Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, was swimming in the sea with friends when he suddenly found himself in difficulty. At first, his friends tried in vain to save him. Emergency services were eventually able to pull the man out of the water. The victim was then transferred in critical condition to hospital, where he died a few hours later.
Everything indicates that it is an accident, according to the prosecution. In addition, swimming was prohibited in this area throughout the day on Saturday, due to the strong wind and the swell.
The mayor of Ostend, following this tragedy, sent a message to his French-speaking colleagues. In comments reported by Sudinfo, the elected official assures that “the inhabitants of the coastal region and of Flanders know that they must listen to the rescuers. We note that, if there are problems, it is mainly with people who come from the French-speaking part of the country. I am not targeting anyone, but they are not aware of the dangers of the sea. I call on my colleagues to get the message across better”.
