Tragic accident in a fast food restaurant in Louisiana: The manager of the branch entered a cold storage room with a defective door and might not get out. When her son discovered her hours later, she was dead.
A fast-food chain employee froze to death in a walk-in cold room with a broken door in Louisiana. Arby’s manager Nguyet L. was desperately trying to get out of the room, US media reports, citing a lawsuit filed in Texas once morest the chain and franchisee. However, she failed to do this. Only following several hours did her eldest son, who also worked in the branch, find his mother dead in the cold room.
Victim was only supposed to work in Louisiana temporarily
“The investigating officer reported that the inside of the cold room door was smeared with blood, from which he concluded that Ms L. panicked when she was locked in and beat her hands bloody to escape or to get someone’s attention “CBS News, among others, quotes from the court document. “Eventually she collapsed and lay face down on the frozen ground in a fetal position. Preliminary autopsy showed hypothermia as the cause of death.” According to Arby’s instructions, the temperature in the refrigerator should always be at least minus 23 degrees Celsius.

Nguyet L. was only temporarily ordered by her supervisor from her workplace in Texas to the restaurant in New Iberia, southeast of the city of Lafayette, according to reports in the eight-page lawsuit. At the time of her death on May 11, the cold room door had been broken for at least nine months, according to a former employee, and “employees used a screwdriver to open and close the door” and “a box of oil to… to keep the refrigerator door open”. According to the ex-employee, the problems with the door were reported to a regional manager who visited the site in August 2022 and saw the cold room.
The quick service restaurant in Lafayette is not owned by Arby’s but is operated by Turbo Restaurants, which is owned by franchise management company Sun Holdings, CBS reports. Nguyet L.’s four children have sued all three companies, as well as Arby’s parent company Inspire Brands, for gross negligence in failing to repair the broken door. They’re asking for more than $1 million in damages.
