A 23-year-old woman died of her injuries on Monday following fans of Brazilian clubs Palmeiras and Flamengo clashed two days earlier in São Paulo, her family said. “Thank you to all those who prayed for my sister but she went to heaven,” wrote on Instagram the brother of the victim hospitalized in serious condition on Saturday evening following being hit by a jet from a bottle. According to São Paulo police, Gabriela Anelli, a Palmeiras supporter, found herself in the middle of clashes outside the stadium where the meeting between the two best Brazilian teams took place in recent years.
Attack with glass bottles
The fight began shortly following kick-off, when a group of supporters of Rio de Janeiro club Flamengo walked through a commercial area where fans of the local team were watching the match on television. Police officers who were there tried to intervene to put an end to the clashes, but they were attacked with glass bottles. It was then that Gabriela Anelli was hit by one of them. “We cannot accept that a 23-year-old young woman should be the victim of such barbarism in a place supposed to be devoted to entertainment. We show our solidarity with the family and call for a rapid investigation,” the Palmeiras club said in a statement.
Tear gas fumes used by the police to put an end to the fight reached the field and the match had to be interrupted twice, before ending in a draw (1-1). Palmeiras and Flamengo have between them won the last four editions of the Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the Champions League.
