On May 29, 2021, shortly following the second lockdown was lifted, six friends from the Avelgem region, in West Flanders, went out to celebrate the end of their exams. Around two in the morning, IV decided to get back on the road and drop off Aimé, a young man of 21, and another of their friends at their home.

But the driver had drunk too much and, near Heestert, he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree at high speed. If IV and GL managed to get out of the vehicle, Aimé was seriously injured. A few days later, he finally died from his injuries. He had a perforated intestine.

More than two years following the tragedy, the driver and his occupant will have to answer for their actions in court. Because the entire scene was filmed on May 29, 2021. The reaction of two friends was filmed by street surveillance cameras. “What happened during the 50 minutes following the accident is particularly painful,” the lawyer for the victim’s family told our colleagues at HLN. “Aimé mightn’t get up because he was in so much pain and they had to take him out of the vehicle himself. He asked for an ambulance to be called, but IV refused. He feared losing his license because he had been drinking.”
