The Bruges Police Court dealt with a particularly sad story last week. This story is that of Maartje, a young woman of 19 years old, and Tibo V., 20 years old.
On October 21, when she and her friends wanted to go out in Knokke, she got into Tibo V’s Audi A5 Cabriolet. The holiday center where the group was staying was too far from the center. They therefore accepted that a young man would come and get them. But there was not enough room for Maartje and so she sat on another person’s lap, without a belt, in the back.

A few minutes later, in the middle of a tree-strewn roadway, the driver accelerated. The young man behind the wheel had only had his license for 10 days. And he had drunk way too much. 0.69 milligrams of alcohol per liter of blood. As a result, he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree.

The shock was violent. Maartje was thrown from the vehicle. With the consequence of an implacable verdict: she has, since this accident, never regained the use of her legs. And she’ll never get it back. “If I had known that there was not enough room in the car, we would never have asked these boys to take us,” Maartje explains to Laatste Nieuws.
That evening, Maartje’s life changed. “For eight months, I was in a rehabilitation center, and today I live with my parents once more. Every morning, every evening, people have to help me… I can eat a piece of toast, drink a glass of water… But that’s all. But I don’t lower my head. I still want to do something good with my life. Before the accident, I was a positive girl. Today, I am even more so.”
The young woman is also determined to finish her studies, in the events industry, without knowing if she will be able to work later.

During his trial, the young driver expressed his regrets. This resident of Knokke-Heist was fined 800 euros and banned from driving for one year.
Maartje is relieved by the verdict. Above all, she is happy to be able to move on, and to be able to fully begin her new life.
