One person died and 14 survived by capsizing an overloaded boat that was traveling without authorization near the southern coast of Haiti, authorities said Saturday.
One of the survivors was hospitalized in critical condition, the Haitian Civil Protection Agency reported. Authorities were still searching for an unknown number of people.
The boat it left late Friday from the town of Anse-a-Pitres near the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It capsized as it was sailing west toward the coastal town of Marigot, said Auguste Sony, an inspector with Haiti’s Maritime and Navigation Service.
He added to The Associated Press that the boat was loaded with 600 bags of flour and more than 15 people, which is why he did not authorize him to leave and reported the case to his superiors.
Sony said the captain ignored the order and set off, insisting that he take the people to Marigot. “It’s very sad that the captain didn’t listen,” she lamented.
Torrential rains have been falling in Haiti since Friday night and bad weather is forecast to continue through Saturday night.
