At least 16 people died, including several children, and more than 26 were injured Saturday when a bus overturned on a highway in Nicaragua, Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo announced. The accident occurred near Rancho Grande, a town in the department of Matagalpa, north of the capital Managua.

“Nine of the 16 people killed have so far been identified,” Rosario Murillo, the wife of left-wing Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, said by telephone on the official Canal 4 television channel.

The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle which was carrying around 70 people and then “overturned” on a bridge, the first lady said. In images broadcast by the media, we might see the yellow bus embedded in one of the metal ramps of this structure and bodies dumped on the highway, while the rescue of people still stuck inside the metal carcass continued. .
