MADRID, 11 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Georgian Ministry of Infrastructure raised this Friday to 24 the death toll from the avalanches that devastated a holiday resort in the mountainous town of Shovi, in the north of the country, last week.
The emergency teams are still continuing with the rescue efforts in search of another nine people who are still missing. More than 210 people have been successfully rescued, according to the Civil news portal.
The authorities have located this Friday another three lifeless bodies in the area affected by the landslide, one of them in a bed of the Rioni river.
According to witnesses who have spoken to the Georgian media, the landslide devastated everything in its path, taking away the small wooden huts that were located on the edge of the Chanchaji river.
Police units, firefighters, border police helicopters, drones and special teams, including a canine unit, participate in the rescue efforts. The operation also includes employees of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Infrastructure.
It is the biggest disaster of these characteristics since the 1991 earthquake, according to what the authorities themselves have reported.
