Motoring » Dutchman Dilano van ‘t Hoff (18) lost his life on Saturday on the Belgian circuit.
Dutch driver Dilano van ‘t Hoff, 18, was killed on Saturday morning in Spa, Belgium, during a race in the European Regional Formula Championship. An “incredibly sad” drama, according to his compatriot, F1 world champion Max Verstappen. According to a statement from the organization and witnesses on site, the accident occurred on the last lap of the race, around 10 a.m., when a chain collision occurred on the Combes straight while it was raining heavily.
This race was scheduled before the 24 Hours of Spa, which started at 4:30 p.m. following a minute of silence. According to the Belgian daily La Dernier Heure/Les Sports, Van ‘t Hoff’s single-seater hit the rail at more than 200 km/h and ended up across the track. A following pilot was unable to avoid it and rammed it from the side. Dilano van ‘t Hoff was Spanish F4 champion in 2020. He drove for the MP Motorsport team.
The circumstances of the accident are reminiscent of those in which Frenchman Anthoine Hubert died in F2 almost four years ago. A drama that was then played out a little higher on the Ardennes circuit, at the level of Raidillon, this impressive uphill curve approached at full speed and ending blind. A tragic scenario that made F1 drivers Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen react, competing this weekend at the Austrian GP.
“It breaks my heart. I think Eau rouge at Spa needs to be looked at because we’ve lost two drivers there in four or five years,” Stroll explained. “It’s really dangerous. We say it every year and it’s not fair. It has to change, ”insisted the Aston Martin driver while Verstappen refuses a priori to incriminate the Spa circuit following the death of his young compatriot. The F1 world champion, who said he was “incredibly sad”, asked that the lessons of this accident be learned.
“We have to look at this kind of situation. It’s easy to blame the track, but I also think looking at how wet it was and that sort of thing, there are definitely things we need to think regarding going forward.” indicated, specifying not to know his young compatriot personally, but “a lot of people from the MP Motorsport team”. Dilano “was a promising driver who had the same dreams that we all had when we were his age, to arrive in Formula 1”. ats
