The Mons-Tournai public prosecutor’s office confirms that the victims of the accident which took place Thursday morning on the motorway in Tournai are all members of the same family. The victims were born in 1975, 1976, 2004, 2006 and 2008 respectively.
The prosecution does not provide more information on the circumstances of the tragedy, but confirms that the accident vehicle was a BMW X5 hybrid.
Thursday morning, around 1:40 a.m., firefighters were called for a brush fire near the interchange between the Tournai-Lille and Tournai-Mouscron (E42/E403) motorways. On the road, the fire men learned that it was a vehicle on fire. According to witnesses, the flames were significant. The car was in the trees planted along the expressway.
“The car was thrown into the air”
Two people were in the car, charred. It was a couple. Three people died outside the vehicle, probably ejected from the car during the impact. They were the couple’s three children. According to the Dutch-speaking press, they were returning from a stay on the coast.

The reasons that caused the vehicle to leave its trajectory are unknown. “For an unknown reason, the driver lost control of his vehicle. This one hit the berm on the right, executed a straight line which led him to then hit the one on the left. Due to the shock, the car was thrown into the air, landed in the trees on the side of the road and burst into flames, ”explained the mayor of Tournai at the start of the day.
