An employee of a Texas airport died Friday following being “sucked up” by the engine of a plane that had just landed on the tarmac, we learned on Sunday from the American agency responsible for investigating the transportation accidents (NTSB).
The man was “sucked into the engine” of a Delta airliner which had “landed at San Antonio International Airport from Los Angeles, California and was taxiing down the runway to reach the gate landing craft, with only one engine running,” the NTSB said.
The NTSB has opened an investigation to determine the consequences of this accident, which occurred Friday around 10:25 p.m. local time.
The man worked for Unifi Aviation, according to local media, a company that offers assistance services to several airlines, including Delta.
The airline Delta said it was “deeply saddened” by this accident and assured “to cooperate with the authorities” leading the investigation, in a press release sent to the local channel KENS 5.
On Wednesday, the airline Piedmont Airlines was fined more than $15,000 by the federal agency responsible for the prevention of accidents at work (OSHA), for its responsibility in the fatal accident of an airport agent, which occurred last year under similar circumstances.
