EFFINGHAM, Ill. — A 5-year-old girl from southern Illinois has died following a starter gate being carried by a car before a harness race struck her as she sat in the stands at a county fair, authorities said. .
Harper Finn, of Altamont, died Wednesday followingnoon at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, according to the City of St. Louis Medical Examiner’s Office.
The accident happened Sunday followingnoon at the Effingham County Fair.
While attending the race, the girl was struck by the folding arm of the starting gate that was attached to a car and failed to close when it was extended into the stands, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office said.
The little girl was rushed to a local medical center and then airlifted to the San Luis hospital.
