The alderman who killed a 22-year-old cyclist in Oudenaarde during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, while he was driving under the influence of alcohol, was released on Thursday under conditions by the investigating judge.
The accident occurred around 11:20 p.m. in rue d’Alost in Oudenaarde. “This is a collision between a car and a cyclist, during which the cyclist died,” said the prosecution. “An expert has been appointed to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident.” The alderman’s driving license was immediately revoked for a period of 15 days.
The driver of the car was Mathieu Mas, alderman and president of the CPAS of Oudenaarde, aged 37. There was no hit-and-run, but the driver tested positive for alcohol. The first results of the investigation also indicate that the alderman was driving at excessive speed.
After his hearing, it was decided that the man would be brought before the investigating judge in Oudenaarde. The prosecution requested his arrest, but the investigating judge released him under conditions. The alderman, however, remains suspected of involuntary manslaughter and drunk driving. He will therefore likely be heard before the police court.
