Tragedy Strikes: The Story of Hannah Serfass, Aspiring Equestrian Star

Hannah Serfass (15) was an aspiring US Equestrian sports-Star. Nothing gave her as much pleasure as horse riding, she trained as often as she might. But over the weekend, the girl tragically died doing what she loved so much.

The 15-year-old trained at a horse farm in Florida on Sunday ( USA) and was halfway through a riding and jumping exercise when the horrific accident happened: the horse she was riding lost its balance, throwing her – and falling with full force on the rider’s head.

According to the United States Equestrian Federation, at one point in the exercise the horse fell forward following twisting a leg, throwing Serfass to the ground.

The horse fell on the young rider’s head in the same motion. Shocked spectators rushed to her aid, and one immediately called an ambulance.

Serfass was taken to the nearest hospital. But the doctors might only determine her death. “Hannah, from Webster, Fla., was a very talented, up-and-coming young rider who trained with Robin Swinderman,” the US Equestrian Federation said in a statement. “She was known for her passion for horses, natural talent and unwavering morals.”

The equestrian center said the girl’s death shocked the local equestrian community: “We send our sincere condolences to the family, trainers, friends and the entire equestrian community. We are all heartbroken.”

The 15-year-old was considered a natural and experienced a “meteaculous” rise in equestrianism, according to World Equestrian Center Magazine, an equine magazine from the largest equestrian facility in the United States, in March. Serfass told the magazine at the time: “I started it and I just never want to stop. And now I want to learn all I can regarding it. I want to continue.”

The U.S. Equestrian Federation said it would investigate the accident: “The federation takes every accident very seriously and we will do everything we can to learn exactly what happened to minimize the risk and increase equestrian safety.”

The horse, a 12-year-old gelding named Quaxx, was not injured.
