Luckily, neither he nor his son were found in the house, but the old man was nowhere to be found. His lifeless body lay in a pond next to the property. His son was taken in by neighbors, then by members of his family, as HLN reports.

After extinguishing the attic fire, firefighters found a large quantity of banknotes, strewn across most of the width of the attic.

Daniel is suspected of having scattered the money himself and setting it on fire before taking his own life. “Daniel was suspicious of everything and everyone, especially when it came to money,” say his acquaintances. “He was stubborn, but always had the best interests of his wife and son at heart. Cécile died of an illness in this house. Daniel did everything he might for her. Until the last moment, he continued to take care of her. But his death was an exceptionally hard blow for him.

Alone, Daniel might no longer cope with the care of their son who was living at home. He was depressed.
